I converted the kit to an H-1 by cutting back the supercharger intakes and forming new, low-profile oil cooler intakes (made from small copper squares cut from a sheet flashing and hammered thin until they were easy to shape). The model represents an aircraft shot down during the BoB on 25 Sep 40. After painting the underside RLM 65, I used black pastel to replicate the temporary black distemper used to tone down aircraft used for night operations. Messy, but I like the effect. Despite my efforts to prevent it, the fuselage decals silvered (which makes me incredibly unhappy). I need to revisit my technique for prepping a surface for decals.

Although I have 3 more He-111s (including an He-111Z) under construction, I decided to take a break and

work on a 1/350 Japanese destroyer - minimal decals and no splinter camouflage.

Explorer, war hero, filmmaker, and cinema pioneer Merian C. Cooper --the adventurer who created King Kong (the original with Fay Wray) --was truly larger than life. Cooper was a member and co-founder of a volunteer American flight squadron, the Kościuszko Squadron, which supported the Polish Army in the Polish-Bolshevik War. On July 13, 1920, his plane was shot down and he spent nearly nine months in a Soviet prisoner of war camp. He escaped just before the war was over and made it to Latvia. For his valor he was decorated with the highest Polish military decoration, the Virtuti Militari.

During the Invasion of Poland in 1939, Miroslaw Feric served with Escadre No. 111, defending the Warsaw area. On 17 September he and other pilots were ordered to evacuate to Romania. Interned he escaped and travelled to France. After training on French aircraft, he was assigned to flying Morane MS-406 fighters protecting aircraft works around Nantes. After the fall of France, Ferić evacuated in June 1940 to Great Britain. After advanced training at an RAF Operational Training Unit he was assigned to the newly formed No.303 RAF (Polish) (Kosciuszko) Fighter Squadron, based at RAF Northolt flying Hawker Hurricanes and entering service in the Battle of Britain on 31 August 1940. Mirosław Ferić was the 11th ranked Polish fighter ace with 8 and 2/3 confirmed kills and 1 probable kill.
